🍃A New Year’s River Caves Canyon Adventure🍃

What better way to begin 2022 than to head outdoors into a gorgeous canyon in the heart of the Greater Blue Mountains? Let Hikeandseek guide you on a larger hiking group tour to the beautiful River Caves Canyon, an experience that will be challenging and spectacular all the same. The River Caves Canyon hike has for many years been one of Hikeandseek’s most popular events! Don’t miss out!

Travelling to River Caves Canyon

Quick briefing at a designated meet up location in Clarence before we drive into Wollemi National Park together– This 20km journey should take roughly 30 minutes as a convoy. 4WDs and/or high clearance vehicles are recommended. 2wd’s can make the trip but will be in for a bumpy ride. Low clearance vehicles are NOT recommended.

Once arriving at the midpoint or our designated trail, there is an impassable creek for 2WDs and a 2.5km walk from this point to the start of the trail head. The roads are suitable for 4WDs only from here and if possible we may do a quick shuttle with the 4WDs if the situation allows to cut 2.5km off our walk. Otherwise we will be walking this 2.5km section as a group. The roads are unsealed and are generally quite bumpy and prone to wear and tear.

After the 2.5 km walk is a further 1.5km with the final 1km being a sustained descent into the canyons. This trail is not especially difficult but can be overgrown in places. The walk is a little more difficult on the ascent on the way back up.

These directions and time allocations will be distributed to confirmed participants in more detail in the form of an itinerary.

FITNESS REQUIRED:
A minimum moderate level of fitness plus an expectation of meeting very cold water is to be recognized. It is by far not the longest hike but can be found to be challenging with many sections of the walk to be uneven. Please enquire with Hikeandseek if unsure of your fitness or technical level for this hike!

The walk including walk in canyon will take up to 5 hours, and the drive to and from River Caves Canyon to Sydney can take up to 2.5 hour one way. Although not guaranteed, carpooling may be available from the meeting location into River Caves.

* This hike is not well suited for first time hikers or beginners and requires participants to be self-sufficient and able to look after their own safety at all times. Please enquire further about suitability for this walk. *

THE CANYON

The canyon waters will be cold. Going into the canyons with the knowledge that you may get wet anywhere is a safe bet and makes it easier to tackle the canyon, although it can be navigated by getting wet only up to the waist-chest in the deepest section. The waters of the canyon will be in the vicinity of 5-10 degrees Celsius and you can avoid getting wet up to the chest if you only complete half the canyon. This may not be the adventure for you if you are especially prone to being exposed to colder temperatures.

River Caves Canyon requires no ropes or special technical training as a walk-in canyon but special care and safety must always be taken as surfaces are slippery - Your sense of balance will be tested

The safest way to tackle the whole day is to wear hiking shoes/closed shoes/wet shoes that can get wet. An extra pair may be brought specifically for the canyon and change back out. Electronics and Photography devices should be kept in waterproof bags and handle these at your own discretion. The middle section of the canyon can be tackled by walking through and holding your bag over your head. We will hike back out of the canyon by returning the same way. By the time we start the ascent walk back up, even the coldest people will have warmed up with the short but challenging slope back out.

This event will go ahead in most weather conditions, barring heavy rain and storms. Heavy rains a day or two before the day may also limit access to the canyon.
