🍃River Caves Canyon Adventure🍃

What better way to enjoy the end of the warmer months than to head outdoors into a gorgeous canyon in the heart of the Greater Blue Mountains? Let Hikeandseek guide you on a smaller intimate hiking group tour to the beautiful River Caves Canyon, an experience that will be challenging and spectacular all the same. The River Caves Canyon hike has for many years been one of Hikeandseek’s most popular events! Don’t miss out! Hikeandseek will provide guidance and assistance where necessary.

Travelling to River Caves Canyon

There are a fair amount of bumps and motion to be expected whilst driving into the National Park . The road conditions of Wollemi National Park and Newnes State Forest are dodgy at best and participants with suspected motion sickness are asked to notify Hikeandseek before the day so that motion sickness tablets can be provided.

FITNESS REQUIRED:
A minimum moderate level of fitness plus an expectation of meeting very cold water is to be recognized. It is by far not the longest hike but can be found to be challenging with many sections of the walk to be uneven. Please enquire with Hikeandseek if unsure of your fitness or technical level for this hike!

The walk - including the walk-in canyon - can take up to 5 hours, and the drive to and from River Caves Canyon to Sydney can take up to 5 hours return.

Further directions and time allocations will be distributed to confirmed participants in more detail in the form of an itinerary.

THE CANYON

The canyon waters will be cold. Going into the canyons with the knowledge that you may get wet anywhere is a safe bet and makes it easier to tackle the canyon, although it can be navigated by getting wet only up to the waist-chest (For a 165cm person) in the deepest sections. The waters of the canyon will be in the vicinity of 5-10 degrees Celsius and you can avoid getting wet up to the chest if you only complete half the canyon. This may not be the adventure for you if you are especially prone to suffering after being exposed to colder temperatures. Swims are not required for this canyon.

River Caves Canyon requires no ropes or special technical training as a walk-in canyon but special care and safety must always be taken as surfaces are slippery - Your sense of balance will be tested.

The safest way to tackle the whole day is to wear hiking shoes/closed shoes/wet shoes that can get wet. An extra pair may be brought specifically for the canyon and change back out.

Electronics and Photography devices should be kept in waterproof bags and handle these at your own discretion. The middle section of the canyon can be tackled by walking through and holding your bag over your head. We will hike back out of the canyon by returning the same way. By the time we start the ascent walk back up, even the coldest people will have warmed up with the short but challenging ascent back out. A Waterproof bag and headlamp can be helpful on this trip but not mandatory.

This event will go ahead in most weather conditions, barring heavy rain and storms. Heavy rains a day or two before the day may also limit access to the canyon.
