🍃An Introduction to the Wollangambe River - Lilo Adventure🍃

Join Hikeandseek on a fun filled water activity day on a beginner’s section of the Wollangambe River. There are many canyoning options available along the Wollangambe River and its creeks with the Wollangambe One Canyoning course being the most famous and arguably most frequented section of the river. Hikeandseek will guide this tour to a lesser frequented section of the Wollangambe River – also a shorter and somewhat less technically difficult open canyon section than the Wollangambe One. After just over an hour’s hike, we will inflate our lilos and set off on the floating/wading part of the canyon. This should last 2-3 hours before we head back out of the river on the tough hour’s return walk.

THE WOLLANGAMBE RIVER

The Wollangambe River is 57km long river that stretches from Newnes all the way to Colo Heights and passes through the Wollemi Wilderness and Blue Mountains National Park. The pristine fresh water Wollangambe River flows through the Wollemi wilderness and is often attempted as a beginner’s canyoning experience - often not involving any abseiling of any sort. Although the 2019/2020 fires ravaged this area, the Wollangambe River has since returned to its pristine quality and much of the burnt out vegetation has returned to the area. The section of Wollangambe we are visiting is very open most of the way and we will be able to clearly see the sky at all times.

  • Bad weather cancellations will apply when there is heavy or sustained ainfall prior to or occurring on the day. Please read the description carefully for tour requirements and read the conditions of the Plan B for the day in bad weather.

PLEASE NOTE: In the case of such weather conditions prior to and including the day, the Larger Group Adventure will go ahead with an alternative plan. Participants booking for the Wollangambe River Tour are also booking for the alternative plan if the weather doesn’t hold up and will be updated via email to participants. Plan B will be a Northern Blue Mountains Adventure visiting some of the most pristine lookouts of the area and will be somewhat similar to what can be encountered on the ‘Northern Blue Mountains Escape’ itinerary. Feel free to enquire more about these terms.

Grade

  • Moderate - Slightly Higher Fitness Level (3.5/5)

  • Easy - Moderate Technical Difficulty (3/5)

No canyoning experience is required on this tour. Technical Difficulty is also at a lower level for this event. However there are a few factors participants should be wary of before taking part in this tour. A moderate level of fitness (slightly higher for some less fond of sustained incline walking) is to be expected on this walk. The return walk may feel tougher after the river trip. You will encounter

·         At least 2 hours of walking total (more if group movement is slower)
·         1 hour of sustained uphill return walk after the lilo adventure down the river
·         Minimal bush bashing
·         Slippery surfaces
·         Some easy grade rock scrambling during the lilo tour
· Some very short sections of deep water easily traversed by floating across.

The water will be very cold even on a hot summer’s day and the best mode of travel may be to make sure as much of your body is floating above the surface of the water. You will meet a wide range of temperature variance from the cold lows of the canyon water to the possible highs of the incline walking back out of the canyon back to the starting location.

* This hike is not well suited for a first time hiker or beginners and requires participants to be self-sufficient and able to look after their own safety at all times. Please enquire further about suitability for this walk. The canyon itself is of an easy grade and liloing should be a relaxing experience but the whole day will provide a fair workout. *
